AKC Scent Work

SDTC holds several levels of Scent Work classes and offers American Kennel Club Scent Work trials during the year. For information on SDTC Scent Work Trials, visit:  Upcoming SDTC Scentwork Trials.

AKC Scent Work is an exciting titling sport in which dogs learn to locate specific scents and communicate to their handler the exact location of that scent. The dog searches for the odor of one or more specific essential oils or for the scent of their handler. Searches in AKC Scent Work are done in a variety of environments: Container, Interior, Exterior and Buried.

Similar to the work performed by detection dogs, our dogs learn to develop their natural scenting abilities while working as a partner with their handler. Unlike many dog sports, Scent Work handlers are encouraged to communicate with and praise their dogs during the search.
